K-ON! Clubroom – Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, everybody!

And a happy new orbital period of the Earth!

K-ON! Clubroom – Cake!

First of all, a big hello to everyone from /r/k_on! Thank you for taking an interest in this project.

Today I was planning to start modelling the cassette player, but although there are some great reference images from the show, I’d like to get some real-world images as well.

Instead, I decided to finally model the centrepiece of the K-ON! clubroom: the cake.

It’s a delicious strawberry shortcake, possibly the most memorable type of cake in the show.

I wouldn’t consider this finished yet: I plan to add cherries and extra decorations to make it even better (not to mention some plates and forks to eat with). Let’s hope Yui can survive until then.

The cake uses simulated subsurface scattering to appear even more realistic (and mouth-watering). Working on this model seriously made me hungry.

Until next time, I’ll be paying a visit to the cake constellation (is there such a thing?).

K-ON! Clubroom – Characters!

Time for a progress update. I’ve ported the loading screen from the Unity 4 version:

But now you can select your favourite character! The full list:

  • Yui
  • Ritsu
  • Mio
  • Mugi
  • Azusa
  • Nodoka
  • Ui
  • Jun
  • Sawako

Choosing a character will change your height in the scene, from Azusa (150cm) to Sawako (165cm). There are also other consequences to your choice. For example, some Easter eggs may only be visible to a certain character.

There’s a few new items laying around as well. You may remember these cards from the second season OP (#2):

And Ritsu’s lucky pencil makes an appearance, along with another surprise item from the first season:

You might also notice that the lighting looks a bit different in the last two images. That’s because the season is now randomly selected from a list when you start the application. The current possibilities are:

  • Summer
  • Spring
  • Rainy Season

Just like your choice of character, the season will alter the environment.

Please don’t say, “you are lazy”, just know that I am crazy. I’ll post again once the Earth has rotated some more.

K-ON! Clubroom – Back In Action!

It’s been a long time, but I’m finally ready to continue working on this project.

The clubroom in the most recent Unity 5 build.

One of the lessons from K-ON! is that you shouldn’t be afraid to rely on your friends!

So if you have any experience 3D modelling and would like to contribute (I’m afraid it will have to be volunteer work), please leave me a message.

The following “major” assets have yet to be created:

  • The turtle and the hare on the banister outside
  • The amps for the various instruments
  • The cassette player
  • Ritsu’s drum kit
  • The old fan (RIP)
  • Decorations inside Ton-chan’s aquarium

Thanks for visiting! Yeah, I’m a rocket ship on my way to Mars.

K-ON! Clubroom – Parts 29 to 34

Let’s take a look at the remaining builds from 2014.

K-ON! - 59 - Stairwell

Here is the stairwell outside the clubroom. There’s still some missing details, but the basic structure of the room is there.

K-ON! - 60 - Stairwell Window

The stairs continue until they’re out of view.

On the other side of the room, the air conditioner that was added during a particularly hot summer.

K-ON! - 62 - Aircon

I still haven’t added the power point it plugs into. I’ll have to do that sometime.

K-ON! - 61 - External Door

This build also saw the addition of a unique external door model. I wasn’t happy with the way it looked here, since it doesn’t have a lot of interesting details.

Immediately following the addition of the air conditioner is the tea cabinet. Sadly, it’s empty in this build. No tea time yet.

K-ON! - 63 - Tea Cabinet

It’s really big, by the way.

After adding the air conditioner and the tea cabinet, I needed the sink to complete this corner of the room.

K-ON! - 64 - Sink

I used a Unity extension called “Reflection Manager” to add some nice reflections to the model. “Reflection Manager” generates cube maps with added parallax correction. It looks really nice in VR.

The next build sees the addition of the two music stands that sit next to the whiteboard. I’m really happy with how these turned out.

K-ON! - 65 - Music Stands

But what’s that sitting on the right music stand?

K-ON! - 66 - Fuwa Fuwa Time

It’s Fuwa Fuwa Time! This is from the scene where Azusa and Yui try to teach Ritsu how to play guitar. Unfortunately, the resolution of the Oculus is a little too low to read the music.

And that’s everything I added back in 2014! Next time, we’ll check out what was added in early 2015. Don’t burn up on re-entry before then!

K-ON! Clubroom – Parts 6 & 7

The next two builds were a lot of fun to develop.

K-ON! - 16 - Blackboard

Plenty of extra decorations were added to the blackboard. There’s some flowers, some animals, an Azu-nyan sketch and Yui’s evaluation of said sketch.

Hardcore K-ON! fans take note: Azusa’s “nyaan!” and Yui’s face are drawn in their respective theme colours.

K-ON! - 17 - Whiteboard

And the whiteboard makes its first appearance.

All the sketches on the whiteboard were traced from screen captures, except for the “Welcome!” message. Fans should recognise the character portraits from the opening of the K-ON! film (as well as Yui’s frolicking rabbit).

K-ON! - 18 - Badges 1

Scattered around the whiteboard are little stickers representing all the characters.

K-ON! - 19 - Badges 2

Each one is matched to an outfit from the Listen!! music video, except for the red and orange star sticker (which comes from Yui’s sticker hobby in season 2 episode 16).

For reference: Ritsu is the green sticker with blue spots, Mio is the purple sticker with red and yellow triangles, Mugi is the striped sticker with a heart, Yui is the lightning bolt with lips and Azusa is the sticker with red polka dots.

K-ON! - 20 - Projector Shadow

If you look closely, you can see some subtle ambient shadowing behind the whiteboard. I’m using Unity projectors to do simple shadows like this. Lots of furniture ends up using this technique in later builds.

K-ON! - 21 - Upgraded Blackboard

After creating the whiteboard, I went back and improved the texture on the blackboard. The music lines are now sharper, and there’s some extra detail on the surface.

These two builds were a lot of fun to develop; I think I stayed up past midnight drawing all the sketches! They’re also the first builds to feature background music. Right now, it’s just a single looping track (“Have Some Tea”), but the music will get a significant upgrade later.

Until next time, see you on Venus (I’ve been playing Destiny on PS4).
